The tone and atmosphere in the short story, “The Sniper” is seen throughout the story in the author's writing. The tone and atmosphere help the reader to understand what the story is about, where it takes place and why.
The tone of the story is full of suspense, the story, “The Sniper”, took place at night in a city that was at war. “The long June twilight faded into the night” .It makes one think what will happen as you read the story. “The sniper could hear the dull panting of the motor. His heart beat faster”. The author wants the reader to feel the suspense kicking in, and it makes one want to continue reading to find out what is going to happen next.
The atmosphere of “The Sniper” refers to the mood of the story, Dark. The mood of the story is seen in certain words words. “He became bitten by remorse.” The words ruse, remorse, dying, pain, and weakness helps the reader understand the dark atmosphere. The words make the reader feel like that something has gone wrong.
The “glass castle” is a dream that the father, Rex Walls, has. Rex keeps telling his family that he is going to build a glass castle for them in the near future. The glass castle symbolizes the Walls’ family at this point. The Walls’ family is fragile and hard as a rock at the same time. The reason that they are fragile is because their glass, they become poor at some points and they don’t have a lot of things other families have. The Walls’ family is also like stone. Their strong and smart, they know how to get bye in life with what they have.
Sierra Leone is an extremely poor African nation. According to Human Rights Watch, over 50,000 people have been killed to date, with over one million people having been displaced. People have been raped, had limbs amputated and more. During the conflict during the war, schools and other infrastructure were vandalized, looted, and burned. Children were unable to attend school as education was grounded to a halt.
“Queen Elizabeth’s Speech to Her Navy on the Invasion of the Spanish Armada”, show how well she uses her female identity to spur her soldiers. Within her speech she says “I know I have a body of a week and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king”, this declares that she is a powerful ruler and is not afraid to show it. Despite her appearance, Queen Elizabeth is strong and confident, she will do anything to inspire her troops and make them stronger and ready for anything.
